7:00 - 9:00 p.m.             Opening Reception & Networking

The official kick-off event to the 2019 Wisconsin Lodging Conference! Meet other Conference attendees at the onsite, causal reception in the Volcano Lounge at the Kalahari. A pizza and dessert buffet will be served, and a cash bar will be available. Student volunteers will be staffing a game tournament.

Join us for an informal breakfast with WH&LA leaders and other Conference attendees. Learn about the WH&LA, ask questions, meet colleagues, and start developing your professional network. 

9:00  - 10:00 a.m.          Opening General Session - Straight Talk on the Industry 

Customized each year to have our panel of experts envision and discuss the most impactful issues impacting lodging properties. This session provides new perspectives and ideas to consider as you continue on your path in the lodging industry. 

10:00 - 10:15 a.m.        WH&LA Annual Meeting of Members

Join us for the 2019 Annual Meeting to learn about the work the current state of the organization and the outlook for the future.  Presiding: 2019 Board Chairman Kimberly Vele, Konkapot Lodge, Bowler

10:30 - 11:45 a.m.         General Session -  Employment and Labor Law Updates

Lodging properties contend with an ever-changing legal landscape at the federal, state, and local level which impact a wide range of workplace issues. Changes in immigration policy, labor shortages, complex wage and hour laws, and other workplace issues can create operational and legal challenges for lodging properties.
Employment law expert Andria Lure Ryan will share her knowledge and experience in providing legal services to the hospitality industry, focusing on the most pressing legal issues and topics facing our industry. In this session, attendees will learn how to manage employees while keeping with industry legislation and human resources best practices. 

Noon - 1:45 p.m.           Awards Luncheon & Leadership in a Changing World™ Keynote

Help honor your fellow WH&LA members as we present student scholarships, Spirit of Hospitality awards, the Hero of Hospitality awards, and our top industry awards. Then, discover how to accelerate your thought leadership and inspire others toward greater success. 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.             General Session - Legislative Advocacy: Lessons with the Experts Panel

Your advocacy efforts are a critical factor in helping shape public policy. There are many points in the legislative process at which you can become more involved – from drafting a bill to its passage and enactment into law. You might, however, be reluctant to advocate on pending legislation for fear of communicating the wrong message. This session will provide members with tips on how to be an effective advocate for the lodging industry. Our panel of experts will share their advice and answer questions about the most pressing legislative issues impacting our industry.

6:30 - 7:30 p.m.             Chairman's Reception 

Join Conference attendees and Trade Show vendors for a relaxed atmosphere perfect for conversation and networking at the end of the first busy day of the 2019 Wisconsin Lodging Conference. 8:00 - 8:45 a.m.              Board of Directors Recognition Breakfast (all welcome!)

For the first time ever, we are recognizing the important work of the WH&LA Board of Directors publically at the Board Recognition Breakfast! All attendees are invited to enjoy a hot breakfast buffet while we honor the people who dedicated their time and talent to the WH&LA in 2019. 

8:45 - 9:30 a.m.              General Session: Wisconsin Department of Tourism Update

Tourism is an integral part of the Wisconsin economy – generating millions in tax receipts, and its broad range of employment creation provides jobs that support the state’s economic health. Wisconsin’s tourism secretary designee Sara Meany will be presenting, the state of the Wisconsin tourism industry, her goals for the Department of Tourism and the state of Wisconsin, and how she’s leveraging her background to raise Wisconsin’s profile as a destination. 

9:45 - 10:45 a.m.            Breakout Session - Superior Hotel Customer Experience 

In this talk, Paul takes you through a journey to understand the hotel industry from the perspective of the Customer Journey. He will explore in great detail what is working and what is not for Hotel Owner/Managers based on actual evaluations. Plus, Paul will provide an exclusive look into his new model TotalCX, and use it to compare the hotel industry experience to other great experiences outside the hotel industry... while uncovering their secrets you can use to create that added advantage in your business! 

9:45 - 10:45 a.m.            Breakout Session - Active Shooter Training

Preparing employees for an active threat situation can appear to be a daunting challenge. In the current political landscape, it is more important than ever to know how to respond to active threat incident – including active shooters and workplace violence. Protective Security Advisor John Busch will share insight on preparing for active-shooter scenarios and training employees to cope with these incidents. Session attendees will learn the tools necessary to develop a plan that leads to a safe, more prepared environment. 

11: 00 a.m. - Noon          Closing General Session - Breaking the Hierarchy: Building a Team of Culture and Respect

Flat organizations are all the rage, but are they truly effective? What is the 'right' way to structure your team? In this session, we will present findings of a cutting-edge meta-analysis of hierarchy and team performance. Dan Ritter and Stephen Utech from Ilumyx will incorporate this analysis into real-world, data-driven examples of organizations that have successfully built cultures built on a foundation of team and collaboration.  Learn from their groundbreaking research and leave with tips on how to create teams that are built to work for you.
